There are two sides to technology and the developments in communication. The one side is negative because many people no longer have face-to-face conversations. The other side of it is positive, especially to people who have friends and family in other states or countries. The best idea is to balance your online communication and still make time for quality, old-fashioned, face-to-face time with your loved ones.
Different types of online communication are available. The ones you use will depend on the relationship with the person you need to contact. The different types are:
Email – This is a shortened term for ‘electronic mail’. Email uses the same process as traditional mail, but it happens much faster. You still have a sender and a receiver. The receiver gets the message within seconds of the sender clicking the ‘send’ button. An email can be sent to more than one person at a time which makes work communication easier.
IM – IM or instant messaging happens across a network. There are different programs or platforms available for IM. It is having a conversation with someone without talking but through typing.
Chat rooms – Chat rooms can be compared to a café with a bunch of people talking about a certain topic. The difference is that a chat room happens on the Internet. It is an area created for people who have the same interest and want to talk about it with others.
Social media – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, MySpace, and blogs are all types of social media. You can easily communicate with your friends through IM messages on these sites. You can also share pictures, videos, and quotes to each other.
Blog – Blogs have become increasingly popular and many of the results on topics in your search engine will lead back to a blog site. A blog is, in simple terms, like a diary or journal. The writer of a blog writes articles or posts about their life, specific topics, or to give information or educate.
Dating sites – These sites make it possible for people to make romantic connections. Looking for a partner has never been this easy.
These are just some of the ways to communicate over the Internet. Skype conferencing and other methods will be discussed later.
